It is an acute viral hemorrhagic disease transmitted by infected mosquitoes. The "yellow" in the name refers to the jaundice that affects some patients.


      An estimated 200 000 cases of yellow fever, causing 30 000 deaths, globally  each year The yellow fever  virus is endemic in tropical areas of Africa and Latin America

      The first phase usually causes fever, muscle cramps, body ache with prominent shivers, backache, headache, loss of appetite, nausea and or  vomiting.  Most patients recover and their symptoms disappear after 3 to 4 days.
 

I    In the second phase , the toxic phase soaring fever returns and the body systems are affected. The patient rapidly develops jaundice and complains of abdominal cramps with vomiting.  Bleeding can occur from the mouth, nose, eyes or stomach, kidney functions deteriorates. 
      
     There is no cure for yellow fever. Vaccination is the most important preventive measure against yellow fever. Treatment is symptomatic, aimed at reducing the symptoms for the comfort of the patient.  
      
Single dose of yellow fever vaccine is adequate to confer continued immunity and life-long protection against the disease. The vaccine provides effective immunity within 30 days.

Personal prevention of yellow fever includes vaccination as well as avoidance of mosquito bites in areas where yellow fever is endemic.
 
Signs and Symptoms
the virus incubates in the body for 3 to 6 days. The  infection occurs  in one or two phases. Most patients improve in 3 to 4 days.


However, 15% of all fellow fever patients enter the second-  toxic phase within 24 hours of the initial remission. High fever returns and several body systems are affected.
The patient develops jaundice and complains of abdominal pain with vomiting.
Bleeding can occur from the mouth, nose, eyes or stomach.
